Every state and country is different in regards to what you need to know specifically but almost all schools have a core ciriculum that you will learn regardless of which massage therapy school you choose. Make sure you check with your state or country first to find out how many hours of instruction you will need in order to get licensed.
First, you'll start learning all about human anatomy and physiology, about all the major and minor muscle groups of the body. Which bones and ligaments are attatched to what?? You will learn what the various systems of the body are (nervous, muscular, respitory, etc...) and how they work together.
This will typically be followed by learning how to properly assess clients and customers. What issues to expect, and how to conduct yourself professionally.
Finally, you will start putting into practice the techniques of the trade. The most common technique that is taught is the Swedish massage, which can include many variations such as, hot stone, thai, etc...
Be prepared to put in alot of time and effort especially with learning the science and anatomy sections. Don't forget that once you get licensed that you will look forward to many exciting career oppertunities once you graduate from a massage therapy school!
